Herb info

During pregnancy:

Red Rasberry Leaf--If you want to prevent a retained placenta, taking Red Raspberry Leaf throughout the pregnancy is a good prevention method as it tones the uterus so that it not only works more efficiently during labor, but during the placental expulsion phase as well.

Nettle or Alfalfa leaf infusion--increases vitamin K and hemaglobin, and help prevent hemorrhage.

During labor:

Red Rasberry Leaf--You can also drink it during labor, but the cumulative effects of taking it over the course of the pregnancy will be of greater value.

American Mistletoe Leaf Infusion--May help quiet nerves, stimulate uterine contractions, help expel the placenta, and stop hemorrhage.

Nettle or Alfalfa leaf infusion-You can also drink it during labor, but the cumulative effects of taking it over the course of the pregnancy will be of greater value.

After baby is born, but before placenta:

Motherwort--If you want to prevent hemorrhage, you can take Motherwort tincture just after the baby is born.

Witch Hazel--If you are already having heavy bleeding, but placenta has still not delivered, you can take Witch Hazel tincture. Witch Hazel is a hemostatic (blood stopper) but does not help expel the placenta.

Blue Cohosh and Ground Ivy--Blue Cohosh and/or Ground Ivy help expel the placenta and cause the uterus to clamp down.

Angelica (Dong Quai)--Angelica is recommended for helping expel a fully adhered placenta.

After placenta:

Shepherd's Purse--Once the placenta has been delivered, if you are still experiencing significant blood loss, Shepherd's Purse is often considered THE herb to use at that point.
